Beacon Hill Holiday Cottages Information
Observatory & Telescopes
Star-gazing is certainly on the increase and the recent adventures of a certain Tim Peake have further piqued the interest (pardon the pun) and our desire to turn our attentions skyward. Guests at Beacon Hill Farm cottages have long been telling us that they love the darkness of the skies here and some bring telescopes to take full advantage. Beacon Hill Farm is, of course, right on the doorstep of an International Dark Sky Park, so there is no better place than here to take in the wonders of our solar system.
We can now offer our guests access to a purpose built observatory and a range of telescopes on any night they wish to take advantage, simply by pre-booking a slot. The octagonal building has a roof that slides completely off leaving the heavens open above! There is comfortably room for the whole family in the observatory and there is seating for those not looking at the stars. Sky maps and information boards line the walls and, in the centre on a solid concrete plinth, we have our incredibly powerful computerised telescope.
We also have 3 Celestron Outland x 8 x 25 Compact Waterproof Binoculars and head torches allow the whole family to simultaneously enjoy the experience.
Each house has some Astronomy books, one particularly aimed at the younger Sky watcher. A booking sheet will be available and guests may book slots of one hour duration as late as they like. Access will be by a key that will be in every cottage. An adult will be required to be present at all bookings as the Celestron Telescope is a high quality telescope, not a toy! Many adults will be content to use the Dobsonian Telescope.
There are two telescopes, one being an excellent starter telescope for all ages and experience levels. The Sky Watcher Skyliner - 200p Dobsonian Telescope will allow you to see great detail of the moon on clear nights and is quick and easy to use.
For more experienced star-gazers or anyone wishing to experience even greater views of the planets and stars, you can take advantage of our brand new state of the art Celestron CPC 1100 Computerised Telescope.
The telescope is fitted with fitted with a StarSense Auto Alignment Camera and takes approximately three minutes to set up.
This powerful machine will allow you to see amazing detail on planets such a Jupiter or Saturn as well as other wonderful deep-sky-objects such as nebulas. Though this sophisticated telescope might seem intimidating, it is surprisingly easy to use.
