In January 2004, I decided to involve Beacon Hill guests in this project by inviting them to leave a bit extra with their bill and many have responded and continue to respond. Over the past five years, visitors staying at Beacon Hill Farm have raised £8260 to 31 December 2008 for the Northumbrian Magazine Chirapatre Appeal. In 2008 guests at Beacon Hill gave a staggering £2316 to the appeal so at that rate we should break £10,000 sometime in the summer of 2009. The enthusiasm of the guests seems undiminished and we regularly update them with the progress of Chirapatre as it continues to expand to become one of the 'best schools in rural Ghana'. Projects undertaken by the Appeal have included building a school library plus reading room and computer training facility, which are used by 10,000 children living in the Kumasi area of Ghana, West Africa. Ten new classrooms have also been built to ease overcrowding at the Chirapatre School Campus. There is now an urgent need to improve kindergarten facilities for 3 to 5 year olds. Currently more than 200 youngsters are squeezed into two small classrooms with a bare church hall used to cope with the overflow. I hope our generous visitors will consider making a donation this year to help the Appeal raise the money needed to build and equip four new kindergarten classrooms. Alun Moore |
