BEACON HILL FARM

Northumberland's Finest Foods

There's A Feast For Foodies In Northumberland

We have so much on our doorstep here at Beacon Hill Farm in Northumberland. Rolling countryside, beautiful coastline, historic castles and gardens and of course the fabulous Dark Skies of Kielder National Park. But people often don’t realise how much Northumberland has to offer in terms of food and drink.

Our guests, some of whom are self-confessed ‘foodies’, often comment on the quality and diversity of the culinary delights available within a short travel time of our holiday cottages. So for those of you who book your UK breaks with enjoying good food and drink very high on the agenda, we can point you towards some of the many regional treats to tantalise your taste buds.

Us Northumbrians like to celebrate our food and drink and there are a number of annual events held in towns and venues across the region. Top of our recommended list are a couple of local festivals that you should really make time for if you are visiting the area.

First up, in terms of the calendar, is the Berwick Food and Beer Festival in September annually.. It really is a must for those who enjoy good, traditional, wholesome food and beer… so that’s everyone then surely?!

The festival usually has a huge range of stands and stalls promoting the finest local produce and beers, and there really is something for everyone with kids able to enjoy activities like cake decorating and pizza making. Note that there may be some restrictions this year due to the pandemic. Entrance prices tend to be only a few pounds and even if food isn’t your obsession, it’s worth a visit to enjoy the ambience and surroundings of this traditional market town, the northernmost town in England.

Another festival to add to your foodie calendar is the Alnwick Food Festival.  The festival is a showcase for local food producers and food from all over the region. From chillies to chutneys and seafood to scones, some of the finest Northumbrian food (and drink!) is made available to sample and if all goes to plan you may even spot a celebrity chef or two, Jean-Christophe Novelli having been a regular attendee in the past.

It’s not just festivals though that make Northumberland a popular gourmet destination. Along the seemingly endless coastline you can sample the finest freshly caught seafood whether that be at a traditional Fish and Chip shop or somewhere more sophisticated like The Potted Lobster at Bamburgh. In fact in many of the regions best eateries, many of which are listed here, you will find many fish and seafood dishes on the menu such as mussels, oysters, prawns, local crab, lobster and kippers as well as some less well known species such as gurnard, pollock, sand dab and other varieties of flatfish that are plentiful off the Northumberland coast.

One of the regions leading seafood outlets championing these new types of delicious seafood, and a must visit for seafood lovers, is the Northumberland Seafood Centre in Amble. Located within the Amble Harbour Village, the centre supplies freshly caught seafood to trade and direct to the public. Open mostly on weekend it is worth checking the Northumberland Seafood website to find out about any special events in the calendar.

So there you have it, if you’re looking for a gourmet UK break with a healthy dose of luxury and relaxation to boot (courtesy of our 4 and 5* cottages and luxury spa facilities), then look no more. Check our online booking area for availability on all of our cottages and as they say in these parts…Thou shalt hev a fishy!
