Upon arrival at Beacon Hill you come up a 100 metre tarmac drive.
The cottages are dotted around extensive gardens in six groups. The maximum distance between any of the cottages is 200 yards. All of the cottages, with the exception of the Courtyard Cottages and North Granary, South Granary, Stable Cottage and Wood Cottage, can have a car taken to the door of the cottage and parked there. There is a dropping off point for the Courtyard Cottages next to a path paved in flat sandstone. The car park for these cottages is 35 yards from the drop off point.
Parking is outside the cottages in all the cottages with the exception of the four cottages above.
The whole of Beacon Hill Farm is on a slope as is most of Northumberland. As a result, there are many different levels surrounding the cottages. We have tried to describe these to you below to allow you to judge if we can meet your access requirements.
Curlew Cottage, Kestrel Cottage and Merlin Cottage are graded Mobility M2 in the Visit Britain Accessibility Grading Scheme. Willow Cottage, Larch Cottage, Oak Cottage and Elm Cottage were built to Accessibility Grade 2, a standard that has been superseded by the Mobility Scheme. Notwithstanding that these four cottages have met a recognised standard, are on one level with ramped access, no steps and ample space. They have often been used by wheel chair users staying with able-bodied friends.
Beacon Hill Spa
The Spa is in the middle of the gardens and it is accessed down a sloping gravelled path and five steps. Regrettably, because of the topography surrounding the Spa, it has not proved feasible to provide wheel chair access to this building. The Spa is however accessible to all others that can manage five steps; there is a hand rail to all steps and the steps are formed in flat sand stone paving.
Once in the Spa, there are no steps in the Spa itself although there is one step at the door way into the Gym. The swimming pool has a Roman end with stepped access to the shallow end. There is a hand rail placed centrally in the Roman end allowing entry to the pool using either right hand or left hand support from the rail.
The Jacuzzi has a wooden step to aid entry and there is also a hand rail to assist with this process.
The steam room and sauna have wide doorways and there is level entry to both rooms.

Source of fire ignition:
The main fire hazards at Beacon Hill Farm probably come from embers falling from the wood burners, from cooking fires and from guests smoking. This latter hazard should have been removed as Beacon Hill is a Non Smoking premises and has been so since January 4 2008.
Sources of fuel:
The main sources of fuel at Beacon Hill Farm that are combustible are logs and oil.
Identify people at risk:
People in and around the premises: we have our guests and our family; there may be other visitors from time to time. Some will be small children and elderly relatives or may have mobility issues.
Evaluate, remove or reduce and protect from risk:
Evaluate the risk of a fire starting:
The likelihood of the logs catching fire without assistance is viewed as unlikely. The likelihood of a cooker fire depends upon the care exercised by the guests. Fire extinguishers are provided. The oil is stored in appropriate tanks and it is very unlikely that diesel will catch fire in such circumstances. The highest risk probably comes from embers falling onto the carpet from the wood burners, although all have hearths that meet building regulations. All our wood burners have been fitted by qualified fitters. We provide fire guards for the two open fires in Beacon Hill Cottage and Quarry House and all guests should use them.
Evaluate the risk to people from a fire:
All of the cottages have ground level windows and 8 of the cottages are single storey buildings; most of the layouts gives guests a variety of options to leave the building safely. Guests are advised on arrival that they must account for all their party in the event of a fire and to call 999 and explain that they are at Beacon Hill Farm Cottages, Longhorsley, Morpeth, not for example Beech Cottage.
Remove or reduce the fire hazard:
As all the properties have been built or converted in the last 20 years, we have minimised fire risks from the outset by following building regulations. The logs are stored away from the occupied barns as are the oil tanks.
Protect people by providing fire precautions:
We have provided fire extinguishers in each cottage and guests have the fire precaution and basic procedures explained to them in the welcome pack and upon arrival. We have fitted smoke detectors and/or heat detectors in all the cottages to current Building Regulations.
Beacon Hill Spa
The Spa is a single story building with 3 external doors. The main entrance on the east side has keyless opening; egress through the Salon is through unlocked doors during opening hours. Escape through the Garden Room is possible through a keyless door lock. The Orangery has large opening windows which are 6 inches above ground level allowing an easy escape route to the south of the building.
The emergency lighting system in the Spa guides guests to the exits. There are suitable fire extinguishers available where required.
