Holiday Cottage Guide

Don’t need our word for it – here’s a comment taken from the Good Holiday Cottage Guide 2000, followed by Bryn Frank writing in the Good Holiday Cottage Guide 2002.

Good Holiday Cottage Guide 2000

It is no exaggeration to say that these are the cottages that many owners all over the north of England aspire to emulate. They are superbly well situated, exquisitely comfortable… and run with professional flair and great good humour.

Good Holiday Cottage Guide 2002

Beacon Hill Farm Cottages are among that select band that show other cottage owners how it’s done: superbly well situated, stylish and comfortable without being embarrassingly over the top, run with professional flair and good humour. It comes as no surprise to us that so many people return year after year, often coming to regard the owners as friends.

It also comes as no surprise that they won the English Tourism Council’s England Self Catering Holiday of the Year Award for the year 2000. Having won this award in 1991, they are the only double winners ever!

The cottages are based on the 350-acre grass farm, which has some of the best views we have seen on our travels. This is a beautiful place with hedgerows full of birds and wild flowers. There are 40 acres of ancient beech woods near the cottages and guests are free to wander in the woods, or anywhere on the estate, as if it were their own. It is difficult to imagine when here that the main road is only three miles away down quiet country lanes. Beacon Hill is perfectly situated for explorations of this fascinating county – Cragside, Wallington Hall, Alnwick Castle and Hadrian’s Wall, and the superb coastline, are all within easy reach. You are also close to the mysterious Cheviot Hills, and Edinburgh is within a day trip.

Among the details that have impressed us over the years are the large quantity of books, the table lamps, the good quality pictures and prints and, above all, the superb views from many of the sitting rooms.

There is a beautiful 42′ heated indoor pool, which is in a 75′ long slate roofed building with large windows, giving excellent views across rolling countryside. There are also a sauna, solarium, spa room, changing rooms a large gymnasium and beauty salon: exceptional by any standards. Beyond the pool is an all-weather tennis court: both are available daily from 6 am to 10 pm. There are also 30 horses on which to ride around the 350-acre estate and beyond in the quiet country lanes that are such an attractive feature of this area. Or try your hand at fly-fishing for trout on a beautifully located two-acre lake.
